The National Human Rights Commission here on Thursday stressed on the need for a relook into labour laws for effective implementation of the laws pertaining to child and bonded labour.Addressing district magistrates and superintendents of police, NHRC Chairperson Justice K.G. Balakrishnan said people belonging to vulnerable sections of society were prone to being exploited as bonded labour. The State government should identify offenders of bonded labour laws and take them to task, Justice Balakrishnan said.
On child labour cases, the NHRC Chairperson hoped that proper implementation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education would help tackle the child labour issue in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said: “There is a need to implement these laws with a new vigour and changed mindset.” “We should question exploitation in every form which is prevailing in society in the name of customs and traditions. District Magistrate and Superintendents of Police should ensure that all the complaints related to violation of any provisions of these laws are investigated promptly and stringent and deterrent actions are taken against the offenders and the law breakers,” Mr. Patnaik said.
